ABSTRACT
Background: Early childhood emotional development is an important aspect in shaping a child's character and social skills in the future. The age period of 3–5 years is known as a critical period for emotional development, where children begin to learn to recognize, express, and regulate their emotions. This study aims to analyze the relationship between maternal characteristics, psychological history during pregnancy, and parenting patterns with the emotional development of children aged 3–5 years in the working area of the Nisam Community Health Center, North Aceh Regency.
Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between maternal characteristics, psychological history during pregnancy, and parenting patterns with the emotional development of children aged 3–5 years in the working area of the Nisam Community Health Center, North Aceh Regency.
Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational design. The sample size was 94 mothers with children aged 3–5 years, selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was performed using Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression.
Results: The results of the study showed that there was a significant relationship between maternal characteristics and children's emotional development (r = 0.807; p = 0.044) and parenting patterns with children's emotional development (r = 0.982; p = 0.009). However, there was no significant relationship between psychological history during pregnancy and children's emotional development (r = 0.034; p = 0.747). Simultaneously, these three variables did not have a significant influence on children's emotional development (F = 0.236; p = 0.871).
Conclusion: This study shows that parenting styles and maternal characteristics contribute more to children's emotional development than the mother's psychological history during pregnancy. These results are expected to inform family interventions and educational programs at the primary healthcare level.
Keywords: child emotional development, maternal characteristics, psychological history during pregnancy, parenting styles
